Toldot Yitzchak – Commentary on the Torah. Mantua, 1558–1559 - Toldot Yitzchak, a commentary on the Five Books of the Torah by the Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Karo. Mantua, 1558–1559. The author, Rabbi Yitzchak Karo, was the uncle and teacher of Maran Rabbi Yosef Karo, author of the Beit Yosef. The book was printed during Maran’s lifetime. Interestingly, the title page erroneously describes Rabbi Yitzchak Karo as Rabbi Yosef Karo’s “grandfather” – an error that became entrenched and was repeated in subsequent editions. The work contains homiletic and exegetical interpretations of the Torah, combining peshat and derash. The author raises fundamental questions on each Torah portion and resolves them systematically and in depth. He integrates the teachings of Chazal and the early commentators with his own original interpretations, illuminating the Biblical text through both scholarly and conceptual analysis. Toldot Yitzchak became recognized as one of the important Torah commentaries composed by the Spanish sages in the generation following the Expulsion. It enjoyed wide circulation and was printed in numerous editions over the centuries. Its teachings are frequently cited in works of Biblical commentary, homiletics and halachah, and it is considered one of the significant works of the 16th-century Spanish rabbinic school. The book is of particular importance due to the stature of its author, who was among the principal teachers of Maran the Beit Yosef and influenced the formation of his scholarly approach during his formative years.
