Machzor for the Entire Year – Exceptionally Rare Miniature Edition. Amsterdam, 1710 - Machzor for the Entire Year, according to the Ashkenazic and Polish rites, containing the order of prayers for the entire year, Torah readings and Haftarot for all the festivals, together with numerous additional texts. Amsterdam, printed by Shlomo Proops, 1710. An extraordinary miniature edition, printed in an exceptionally small format yet produced with impressive editorial and typographical craftsmanship. On the title page, the printer proudly describes the volume: “Small in size but great in quality, the likes of which has never before been printed, ” and further declares that it contains: “And many additional texts which have never before appeared even in a large Machzor.” The Machzor is fundamentally based on the Ashkenazic rite, supplemented by the customs and piyyutim traditionally used according to the Polish rite. In this miniature format, it incorporates an unusually broad range of additions that had not appeared in previous editions. The edition was printed with the approbations of the rabbis of Amsterdam, Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh Leib and Rabbi Shlomo Ayllon. Miniature prayer books were intended for frequent personal use and were carried regularly by their owners. Consequently, most copies became heavily worn, damaged or lost over the centuries. Complete copies of this edition are exceptionally rare, and to the best of our knowledge, a complete copy has never before been offered at public auction. 314 leaves. 10 cm. Condition: Very good. Minor tear to the margin of the title page, not affecting text. Original leather binding. Gilt edges.
