“We Have a Promise… Whoever Blesses Shall Be Blessed” – A Powerful Mussar Letter from the Mashgiach Rabbi Yechezkel Levenstein - A Fascinating Letter Entirely Handwritten and Signed by the Renowned Mashgiach, the Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Yechezkel Levenstein, One of the Greatest Mussar Masters of the Last Generation. The Letter Includes Rare Blessings for the New Year and Penetrating Words of Mussar. Petach Tikva, Tishrei 5696 [1935]. The letter is addressed to the young Yitzchak Epstein, who had immigrated to Eretz Israel from Kletzk approximately a year earlier. He later became one of the founders of the Military Rabbinate, served as a dayan on the Tel Aviv Rabbinical Court, and was an editor of the Talmudic Encyclopedia. At the time, he was close to the Gaon Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer, and later became one of the associates of Rabbi Elazar Menachem Man Shach. At the beginning of the letter, the Mashgiach blesses “the young man Yitzchak Epstein” with a Ketivah VaChatimah Tovah and adds: “For indeed, we have a promise in the Torah: ‘And I will bless those who bless you’ – whoever blesses the children of Abraham shall be blessed by the Almighty!” The Mashgiach then continues with a profound moral teaching: “This must always be a person’s aspiration – to acquire and attain things that endure, rather than things that perish and come to an end.” The Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Yechezkel Levenstein [1885–1974] was one of the greatest Mussar masters of the last generation. He served as spiritual supervisor (Mashgiach) of the Mir, Lomza, and Ponevezh yeshivot. He was a disciple of the Chafetz Chaim, Rabbi Yerucham Levovitz, Rabbi Nachum Zev Ziv (son of the Alter of Kelm), and Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Broida. He was renowned for his extraordinary asceticism and exalted service of Hashem. Rabbi Shach testified concerning him: “The Mashgiach is the greatest servant of Hashem I have ever seen in my life, ” and in his eulogy declared: “Even in the generation of great spiritual stature before the War – he was among the exceptional few.” His teachings were published in the Or Yechezkel series.
