Amudei Shlomo – First Edition. Basel, 1600 - Amudei Shlomo, by Rabbeinu Shlomo Luria (Maharshal), a commentary on the Sefer Mitzvos Gadol (Semag) of Rabbi Moshe of Coucy. Basel, 1600. First edition. The work was printed in two parts, each with its own title page: a commentary on the Negative Commandments and a commentary on the Positive Commandments. Leaf 115 contains an attractive diagram illustrating the laws of Kilayim in the Talmudic discussion of an arugah (garden bed). Rabbeinu Shlomo Luria – the Maharshal (1510–1573) was one of the foremost halachic authorities of Ashkenaz and among the principal architects of the classic Ashkenazic method of Talmudic study. He headed several prominent yeshivos and served as rabbi of a number of communities, ultimately in Lublin. A contemporary and close associate of the Rema, he nevertheless disagreed with him on numerous halachic issues. His writings, foremost among them Chochmas Shlomo, became cornerstones of Talmudic and halachic scholarship and profoundly influenced generations of Torah scholars and halachic authorities. Presented here is the first edition of one of the Maharshal's principal works.
