Presented here is the personal copy of the classic work Midrash Shmuel on Pirkei Avos, which served the great Iraqi kabbalist Rabbi Yehudah Fattaya in his Torah study. The title page bears his characteristic autograph signature: ”HaTza'ir Yehudah Moshe Yeshuah Fattaya, Yitz”ו.” In addition, three autograph marginal glosses in his handwriting appear throughout the volume. Midrash Shmuel, authored by Rabbi Shmuel de Ozida, one of the foremost disciples of the Arizal, is among the most comprehensive and influential commentaries on Pirkei Avos. The work serves as a veritable encyclopedia, bringing together explanations, ancient Midrashim, and interpretations from the Rishonim and Acharonim, alongside the author's own original insights. The renowned kabbalist Rabbi Yehudah Fattaya (1860–1942), foremost disciple of the Ben Ish Chai, was one of the greatest halachic authorities and kabbalists of the Jewish communities of Iraq and the East. He authored the celebrated works Minchas Yehudah, Afikei Mayim, and others. Revered as a master of practical Kabbalah, he was famed for his extraordinary spiritual stature, for performing acts of salvation, and for exorcising dybbuks.
