Pri HaEtz – First Edition. Copy of the Holy Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich, Av Beit Din of Șimleu, Author of “Lechem Shlomo” – His Autograph Signature. On the title page appears the autograph inscription and signature of the holy Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich, in which he records that the book was presented to him by the author: “B”H, a gift sent to me by the Gaon, the author, may he live… HaKatan Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich.” The holy Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich (1863–1944), author of Lechem Shlomo, was one of the foremost Torah giants and tzaddikim of Hungary in the generation preceding the Holocaust. He served as Av Beit Din of Șimleu (Shamloy) and headed the renowned yeshiva there, which became one of the important Torah institutions in Hungary. He was raised in the home of his illustrious grandfather, the holy author of Kol Aryeh, and as a child received a blessing from the holy Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch of Liska. He was close to the author of Kedushat Yom Tov of Sighet and was held in exceptional esteem by the great rabbis and Chassidic leaders of his generation. It is related that the Rebbe of Ratzfert would refer halachic questions to him, declaring: “There is no one in this generation who answers halachic questions as correctly as the Rabbi of Shamloy.” When the Jewish community of Shamloy was liquidated in 1944, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman was offered the opportunity to escape to Romania, but refused, choosing instead to remain with the members of his community. In the final pamphlet he composed, he wrote the words: “It is a time of distress for Jacob, but from it he shall be saved.” Shortly thereafter, he was murdered al kiddush Hashem together with members of his community.
