An important autograph manuscript containing a lengthy eulogy composed upon the arrival of the sorrowful news of the passing of the illustrious Rabbi Asher Covo (1799–1874), Chief Rabbi (Chacham Bashi) of Salonika, the famed ”Jerusalem of the Balkans, ” and author of the celebrated responsa Sha'ar Asher. The discourse extends over six large pages and was written by an outstanding Torah scholar—apparently one of the sages of Jerusalem or Damascus, judging by the style and script. The manuscript displays not only profound Talmudic scholarship but also an exceptionally eloquent literary style. Rather than opening with words of lamentation alone, the author begins with an extensive halachic and Talmudic discourse, following the tradition of the great rabbinic eulogists who honored towering Torah figures through learned exposition. The manuscript contains penetrating analysis, intricate discussions linking diverse Talmudic passages, and original interpretations of the sayings of Chazal, all reflecting the author's remarkable scholarship and his desire to pay tribute to the Torah greatness of the deceased. The homily is interwoven with elevated biblical language mourning the loss suffered by Salonika, portrayed as a city once ”filled with sages and scholars, ” whose spiritual light had now been extinguished. The opening section concludes with the poignant words: ”U'LeAsher Hemar...”, encapsulating the grief felt throughout the Jewish world. Rabbi Asher Covo was among the foremost rabbinic authorities of nineteenth-century Greece and the Ottoman Empire. As Chief Rabbi of Salonika, his halachic rulings and communal leadership profoundly influenced Sephardic Jewry. His monumental responsa Sha'ar Asher, printed in Salonika, remains a classic work of halachic literature and stands as enduring testimony to his extraordinary scholarship. The present manuscript is a rare contemporary witness to the immense reverence he inspired throughout the Jewish communities of the Middle East, from Jerusalem and Damascus to the Balkans.
