The Special Amulet that Rabbi Yeshayale of Kerestir Would Give to Those Seeking His Blessing - Parchment Amulet Attributed to the Holy Tzaddik and Miracle Worker Rabbi Yeshayale of Kerestir – the “Master of the Key to Livelihood” A parchment amulet which was apparently given by the holy hands of the wondrous Tzaddik and renowned miracle worker, Rabbi Yeshaya Steiner of Kerestir, known as the “Master of the Key to Livelihood, ” whose amulets became renowned for extraordinary salvations beyond the natural order. Before us is an amulet identical in form and text to amulets distributed by Rabbi Yeshayale of Kerestir. This rare amulet survived the wars and upheavals of the past century, from the lifetime of Rabbi Yeshayale until the present day. It is important to note that Rabbi Yeshayale would instruct that his amulets could be transferred from one person to another and were not restricted to the individual for whom they were originally given. The first line of the amulet contains the sacred Names: “ילשת באשר בוליב”, formed by interweaving the initial letters of the verses: “May there be peace within your walls, tranquility within your palaces” (Psalms 122:7), and “No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague approach your tent” (Psalms 91:10). The second line contains the sacred Names: “והאפה הב מוג ולה”, derived from the initial letters of the words in the verse: “And the men who were at the entrance of the house they struck with blindness, from the smallest to the greatest, so that they wearied themselves trying to find the entrance” (Genesis 19:11). The holy Tzaddik Rabbi Yeshaya Steiner – Rabbi Yeshayale of Kerestir [1852–1925], was among the most important Chassidic Rebbes of Hungary and one of the celebrated Tzaddikim of his generation. He was renowned as a pillar of charity and prayer and as a miracle worker whose prayers brought salvation. His home was perpetually open to all, and multitudes ate at his table. He distributed enormous sums to charity and famously remarked: “While the great sages of Israel occupy themselves with ‘razin d’razin’ [the most profound mystical secrets], I occupy myself with ‘lasova velo larazon’ [that people should eat their fill and not go hungry].” His reputation as a miracle worker spread throughout Hungary, and Jews and non-Jews alike flocked to his court to receive his blessing and seek salvation. The Rebbe Rabbi Yissachar Dov of Belz famously declared concerning him: “The key to livelihood is in the hands of Rabbi Yeshaya of Kerestir.” To this day, many thousands visit his gravesite to pour out their hearts in prayer, and numerous accounts of salvations attributed to prayer at his grave continue to circulate. His portrait is also famously displayed as a traditional segulah for protection against mice, as recorded in Mei Be’er Yeshayahu. The Celebrated Amulets of Rabbi Yeshayale of Kerestir One of the means through which Rabbi Yeshayale was renowned for bringing supernatural salvation was the distribution of amulets intended to invoke mercy, protection and deliverance from adversity. His amulets became particularly celebrated in connection with livelihood, and accounts of extraordinary miracles associated with them circulated among his followers with reverence. The book Mofet HaDor relates the story of a Jewish laundry owner whose non-Jewish competitors sought to destroy his livelihood. Rabbi Yeshayale gave him an amulet similar to the present one. His competitors sent a young man to set fire to the Jewish laundry, but the youth was, as it were, “struck with blindness” and could not locate it. Instead, he mistakenly set fire to the laundry belonging to the very competitors who had sent him. There are also well-known accounts concerning individuals who possessed such amulets during the Holocaust and experienced extraordinary deliverance. Rabbi Aharon Friedman of Bnei Brak possessed such an amulet, which he had received from Rabbi Yeshayale himself in connection with obtaining an exemption from military service. According to the account, the exemption was granted in remarkable circumstances: a high-ranking commander suddenly appeared and sent him home without examination or interrogation. Rabbi Friedman carried the amulet with him throughout the Holocaust and survived numerous dangers under extraordinary circumstances. According to accounts subsequently published, the amulet continued to be associated with protection for his descendants after their arrival in Israel, including incidents at border and customs crossings. The tradition of miracles and salvations associated with Rabbi Yeshayale did not end with his passing, and the few individuals who possess such amulets today have related accounts of exceptional blessing, abundance and protection. Rabbi Yeshayale received the tradition of preparing and distributing amulets from his teacher, Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch of Liska,
