Five-Dollar Bill Received from the Holy Hands of the Lubavitcher Rebbe – 1992 - A five-dollar bill received from the holy hands of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, on 21 Shevat 5752 [1992]. The story behind the present bill is particularly moving and is documented in the personal testimony of its recipient, Rabbi Yanai Goldberg. During 1991–1992, Rabbi Yanai Goldberg was a student at the Rabbinical College of America in Morristown, New Jersey. One day, while studying in the Beis Midrash, word suddenly arrived that the Rebbe was distributing kuntresim, lekach and dollars at 770. Upon hearing of the distribution, Rabbi Goldberg immediately left the Beis Midrash and hurried by car from Morristown to 770, hoping to arrive in time to receive something directly from the Rebbe’s holy hand. He arrived at the very last moment. According to his testimony, he was the final person to make it inside and receive a five-dollar bill from the Rebbe’s holy hands during that distribution – the very bill offered here. Rabbi Goldberg recorded the story in his personal testimony: “I, Yanai Goldberg, was a student at the Rabbinical College of America, Morristown, New Jersey, between 1991 to ’92. While in the Beis Midrash, a call came through that the Rebbe was giving out kuntresim, lekach and dollars. I rushed in the van to 770 and was the last to get in and receive a $5 from the Rebbe’s hand.” Yanai Goldberg, August 5, 2026. Of particular significance, the recipient himself documented the date on which he received the bill from the Rebbe directly on the bill, inscribing: “21 Shevat 5752,” alongside his signature in English: “Y. GOLDBERG.” This contemporary inscription on the bill provides additional direct documentation of its provenance and the date on which it was received. Before us, therefore, is a bill transferred directly from the Rebbe’s holy hand to its recipient, with the circumstances and date of its receipt documented both in the recipient’s written testimony and in the inscription he personally recorded on the bill itself. The Segulah of “Money from a Tzaddik” The Rebbe once explained the special quality of money received from a Tzaddik, emphasizing its potential to bring blessing and abundance in one’s livelihood. Just as a small quantity of wine remaining from a Kos Shel Berachah, when mixed into an entire barrel, imparts the special quality of the remnants of the cup to the entire barrel, so too, when even a single coin received from a Tzaddik is incorporated into a person’s possessions, all of his property acquires the special quality of “money from a Tzaddik” and is blessed through it. The Rebbe connected this concept to the teaching of Chazal (Bava Batra 15b): “Whoever takes a perutah from Job is blessed” – indicating that even a small sum received from a Tzaddik has the power to bring blessing upon one’s entire fortune.
