Letter from the Renowned Collector and Bibliophile David Solomon Sassoon to Rabbi Yehuda Leib Fishman-Maimon. 1932 - Typed letter signed by David Solomon Sassoon, one of the most important collectors and scholars of Hebrew manuscripts in the twentieth century, addressed to Rabbi Yehuda Leib Fishman-Maimon. In the letter, Sassoon thanks Rabbi Fishman-Maimon for his inquiry and for inviting him to contribute an article in memory of the distinguished scholar Rabbi Benjamin Menashe Levin, for whom he expresses profound admiration and respect. He apologizes, however, that due to his many commitments and lack of available time, he is unable to comply with the request. During the course of the letter, Sassoon refers to Azkarah, the memorial volume dedicated to the memory of Rabbi Abraham Isaac HaKohen Kook, as well as to his monumental bibliographical project Ohel David, the celebrated catalog of his collection of Hebrew manuscripts and rare books, which remains one of the foundational reference works in the study of Hebrew manuscripts. This letter is of considerable cultural and bibliographical interest, reflecting David Solomon Sassoon’s connections with the leading figures of Jewish scholarship and publishing in his generation, as well as his status as one of the central personalities in the fields of manuscript collecting, Hebrew bibliography, and the preservation of the literary treasures of the Jewish people.
