Autograph Postcard Signed by Rabbi Yisrael Halberstam of Dzhmigrod. Dzhmigrod, 1934 - An official postcard entirely handwritten and signed by Rabbi Yisrael Halberstam, later the Rebbe of Dzhmigrod, sent to the editorial office of the newspaper HaTor in Jerusalem. An early and interesting document from Rabbi Yisrael’s youth, when he still signed as the son of Rabbi Sinai Halberstam of Dzhmigrod. The postcard reflects his ties with the Jewish community in the Land of Israel and its institutions in the years preceding the destruction of European Jewry. Rabbi Yisrael Halberstam of Dzhmigrod (1911–1981), a descendant of the illustrious Sanz dynasty, was the son of Rabbi Sinai Halberstam of Dzhmigrod and grandson of Rabbi Baruch Halberstam of Gorlice. During the Second World War he escaped Europe via Siberia and Tehran and was actively involved in efforts to assist Jewish war refugees. His name is also associated with the historic rescue of the “Children of Tehran, ” one of the most remarkable episodes in the rescue of Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. After arriving in the Land of Israel, he settled in Jerusalem and married a granddaughter of Rabbi Shimon Aharon Polonsky of Tiplik. In later years he moved to the United States, where he established his court and synagogue, led a community of followers, and became one of the prominent rebbes of the postwar Sanz dynasty. Presented here is a noteworthy Hasidic-historical item: an original document from the early life of an important scion of the Sanz dynasty, many years before he assumed his role as a Rebbe. The fact that the entire text is handwritten and signed by him adds considerable personal and historical significance. Official postcard. 15 × 10.5 cm.
