Lemberg (Lvov), 1880. First edition. An especially important and distinguished copy bearing numerous signatures of Rabbi Shmuel Heller of Safed, together with a manuscript annotation in his hand. Rabbi Shmuel Heller (1800–1884) served as the rabbinic leader of the Ashkenazic community of Safed for more than forty years and was one of the most influential figures of the Old Yishuv in nineteenth-century Galilee. In addition to his renowned scholarship and communal leadership, he was widely respected for his medical knowledge, and both Jews and Arabs from throughout the region reportedly sought his advice and remedies. A well-known Hasidic tradition relates that, as a child, he was privileged to spend time in the presence of Yaakov Yitzchak Horowitz. According to the story, during a Passover Seder he witnessed an extraordinary spiritual experience while the famed Hasidic master was immersed in profound devotion. This episode was later cited by his followers as an early indication of the remarkable insight and abilities for which Rabbi Heller became known. The signatures and manuscript annotation found in the present volume significantly enhance its importance, connecting it directly to one of the most revered rabbinic leaders in the history of Safed and the Old Yishuv.
