Distinguished Copies with Ownership Signatures of Rabbi Eliyahu Chazan, Chief Rabbi of Alexandria Responsa Maharshaldam, by Rabbi Shmuel de Medina—one of the foremost halachic authorities of the Sephardic world and leader of the sages of Salonika. Two parts: Orach Chaim and Yoreh De'ah, and Even HaEzer. Salonika, 1797. An early edition of one of the most fundamental and important responsa works in halachic literature. The responsa of the Maharshaldam were accepted throughout the Jewish world and became a cornerstone of both Sephardic and general halachic jurisprudence. He was recognized as one of the greatest halachic authorities in the generations following the Expulsion from Spain. The present copies possess especially distinguished provenance: both volumes bear ownership signatures and personal inscriptions of the gaon Rabbi Eliyahu Chazan, son of the gaon Rabbi Yosef Raphael Chazan, author of Chikrei Lev, and grandson of the Rishon LeZion Rabbi Chaim David Chazan. The gaon Rabbi Eliyahu Chazan (1848–1908) was one of the leading Sephardic rabbis of his generation. He immigrated to Jerusalem in his youth together with his grandfather, the Rishon LeZion Rabbi Chaim David Chazan, received rabbinic ordination from him, and served as a dayan on the rabbinical court of Jerusalem. In 1889 he was appointed Chief Rabbi (Chacham Bashi) of Alexandria, Egypt, where he became renowned as a spiritual leader and major halachic authority for the Jews of Egypt and the broader Sephardic world. He authored Ta'alumos Lev, Zikhron Yerushalayim, and other important works. Copies of distinguished rabbinic provenance, from the library of one of the leading rabbis of Jerusalem and Alexandria, a descendant of a prominent rabbinic dynasty that stood among the leaders of Sephardic and Eastern Jewry for generations.
