Rabbinical Court Ruling Issued by the Beit Din Tzedek of the Ashkenazi Communities (Edah HaChareidis), Jerusalem – 1943 - Official rabbinical court ruling issued by the Beit Din Tzedek of the Ashkenazi Communities – the Edah HaChareidis of Jerusalem, dated 1943, during the height of the Second World War. The document bears the autograph signatures of the three distinguished members of the court who headed the judicial system of the Edah HaChareidis in Jerusalem: Rabbi Reuven Zelig Bengis – Av Beit Din of the Edah HaChareidis, one of Jerusalem’s foremost halachic authorities, and author of Leflagot Reuven. Rabbi Pinchas Epstein – later Gaavad of the Edah HaChareidis, among the leading disciples of the Lithuanian yeshivah world and one of the most prominent halachic authorities in twentieth-century Jerusalem. Rabbi David Jungreis – Raavad of the Edah HaChareidis and one of the principal leaders of Jerusalem’s Old Yishuv for many decades. Accompanying the ruling is a separate declaration submitted by one of the litigants as part of the legal proceedings. The statement is signed by Avraham Chaim Bernstein, who apparently served as the court scribe or secretary at the time. The declaration appears to be directly connected to the proceedings and verdict recorded in the present document, and together they constitute a partial legal case file documenting a matter adjudicated before the Beit Din of the Edah HaChareidis. Official documents of the Beit Din Tzedek from the early years of the late Mandate period, bearing the original signatures of all members of the judicial panel, are seldom encountered on the collectors’ market. The present document offers an authentic glimpse into the day-to-day activity of the supreme rabbinical court of the Edah HaChareidis, which served as a central religious and judicial authority for tens of thousands of residents of the Old Yishuv in the Land of Israel.
