Autograph Manuscript Signed by Rabbi Baruch Eliyahu Wessely of Bonyhád – Close Associate of Rabbi Akiva Yosef Schlesinger - Autograph Manuscript by Rabbi Baruch Eliyahu Wessely of Bonyhád – Close Associate and Confidant of Rabbi Akiva Yosef Schlesinger An autograph manuscript written and signed by Rabbi Baruch Eliyahu Wessely zt”l, one of the prominent rabbis of Bonyhád, Hungary. Rabbi Baruch Eliyahu Wessely was among the distinguished Torah scholars of Hungarian Jewry and is particularly remembered as a close friend and confidant of the renowned kabbalist and rabbinic leader Rabbi Akiva Yosef Schlesinger zt”l, one of the foremost champions of traditional Judaism and early Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel. During Rabbi Schlesinger’s years in Jerusalem, Rabbi Wessely enjoyed a uniquely close relationship with him and later testified that he had heard from him profound mystical teachings and hidden secrets. He also stood steadfastly at his side during periods of controversy, supporting and defending his revered friend against opponents and critics. In the present manuscript, Rabbi Baruch records a spiritual teaching that he heard from his mother, adding an original insight of his own. He explains that just as the Almighty “withdraws from His greatness” in order to draw close to His creations, so too must man distance himself from material pursuits in order to draw nearer to his Creator. He then develops the idea further, writing: “In my humble opinion, we are likewise obligated to withdraw and humble ourselves from our own greatness, in order to bring ourselves closer to all human beings, both collectively and individually...” He connects this concept to the verse, “And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, ” and concludes with a moving expression of humility: “He who shares in the suffering of Israel, who clings to the dust of the feet of those who serve God faithfully, and who awaits His salvation and Heavenly mercy soon—the humble Baruch Eliyahu.” These remarkable words lend the manuscript special significance, providing a direct window into Rabbi Wessely’s worldview, humility, and aspiration to foster harmony between fellow Jews and to bring Israel closer to their Father in Heaven. His father, Rabbi David Wessely zt”l, served as rabbinical judge in Derecske. His son, Rabbi David Wessely zt”l, was among the foremost disciples of Rabbi Simcha Bunim Sofer, author of Shevet Sofer, in Pressburg. In 1920 he was appointed Chief Dayan and Av Beit Din of Pressburg, while simultaneously delivering advanced lectures before the students of the famed Pressburg Yeshivah under the leadership of Rabbi Akiva Sofer, author of Daas Sofer, a position he held until his passing.
