“Regarding Kosher Food” — A Rare Document Concerning Kashrut, Signed by Maran Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski. Vilna, 1927 - A rare invitation bearing the signature of Maran Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski, Rabbi of Vilna and the foremost spiritual leader of Lithuanian Jewry, summoning the recipient to a special gathering at his home concerning “kosher food and other matters.” Vilna, 1927. The invitation opens with the heading: “Honored Friend!” Rabbi Chaim Ozer invites the recipient to attend a meeting at his residence and adds, in his own hand, the emphatic note: “Your participation is very necessary.” The date indicates that the invitation was issued on a Thursday for a meeting scheduled for the coming Saturday night, suggesting both the urgency of the matter and the importance Rabbi Chaim Ozer attached to the gathering. The present document offers a rare glimpse into the world of Jewish kashrut before the establishment of the organized kashrut agencies and rabbinical supervisory bodies familiar today. At a time when matters of kashrut were addressed directly by the leading Torah authorities themselves rather than by institutional organizations, Rabbi Chaim Ozer convened a special meeting in his own home to discuss issues relating to “kosher food.” The very fact that the foremost rabbinic leader of Lithuanian Jewry considered it necessary to assemble such a gathering highlights both the public significance of the issue and his personal involvement in overseeing matters of kashrut. Before us is a rare historical document from the formative era of communal kashrut supervision, many decades before the emergence of the organized kashrut systems known throughout the Jewish world today. Maran Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski (1863–1940), Rabbi of Vilna, President of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah, and author of the celebrated responsa Achiezer, was the preeminent spiritual leader of Lithuanian Jewry and of much of the Orthodox world during the first half of the twentieth century. His era included such towering figures as the Chafetz Chaim and Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik of Brisk. The Chafetz Chaim himself referred to him by the extraordinary title: “The President of Klal Yisrael.”
