“The Establishment of the Rabbinical Court” — Founding Document of the Rabbinical Court of Jaffa, Signed by Israel’s Chief Rabbis, Rabbi Isaac Herzog and Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Hai Uziel - A historical document of exceptional public and rabbinic significance—an official authorization for the establishment of the Rabbinical Court of Jaffa, bearing the signatures of Israel’s Chief Rabbis: Rabbi Isaac Isaac Halevi Herzog and Rishon LeZion Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Hai Uziel. The letter is addressed to the gaon and chassid Rabbi Yehoshua Menachem Ehrenberg, Av Beth Din of Jaffa and Tel Aviv, and conveys the formal approval of the Chief Rabbinate for the establishment of the new court. In their letter, the Chief Rabbis write: “We were pleased to receive notification regarding the establishment of a special Rabbinical Court for the Holy City of Jaffa, and hereby transmit an original copy of our formal approval.” They further bless those who will stand at its head: “May Hashem stand with him in the assembly of God, to bring forth the light of true justice.” Before us is a foundational document in the history of the Rabbinical Court system in the State of Israel. Only a few years after the establishment of the State, at a time when the institutions of the Chief Rabbinate and the framework of Jewish law were being reshaped and organized, the Rabbinical Court of Jaffa–Tel Aviv was established. It would go on to become the foremost and most important rabbinical court in the country. Over the course of decades, hundreds of thousands of cases involving marriage, divorce, personal status, and family law were adjudicated within its walls, and it continues to serve as a cornerstone of Israel’s Rabbinical Court system. The present document is the official birth certificate of what became the most important rabbinical court in the State of Israel, constituting the formal authorization for its very establishment. Author of the celebrated Heichal Yitzchak responsa and numerous other rabbinic works. A leading figure of the Jewish Yishuv and a prominent advocate for the establishment of the State of Israel. Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Hai Uziel (1880–1953) The first Sephardic Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel, one of the greatest Sephardic sages of modern times, and author of the renowned responsa Mishpetei Uziel. He is regarded as one of the principal architects of the Chief Rabbinate in Eretz Israel. Rabbi Yehoshua Menachem Ehrenberg (1905–1976) Author of Teshuvot Devar Yehoshua, one of the leading halachic authorities of his generation, Av Beth Din of Tel Aviv–Jaffa, and among the foremost figures in Israel’s Rabbinical Court system. A rare historical document recording the earliest chapter in the history of one of the central institutions of Jewish law in the State of Israel, bearing the signatures of the country’s first Chief Rabbis and marking the formal establishment of the Rabbinical Court of Jaffa.
