Rare Rabbinic Certification by Maran Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, Mara D’Ara d’Yisrael - An exceedingly rare certification for a ritual slaughterer (shochet u’vodek), handwritten and signed by Maran Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem and spiritual leader of the Old Yishuv, who was revered by his contemporaries as “Mara D’Ara d’Yisrael” — the acknowledged master of the Land of Israel. Jerusalem, 1923. The certification was issued to Rabbi Yaakov Kopel Lechovitzki, after presenting his slaughtering knife before Rabbi Sonnenfeld, as was customary in granting authorization for ritual slaughter. The text reads: “The poultry slaughterer, Rabbi Yaakov Kopel Lechovitzki, may his light shine, presented his knife before me and it was found to be fit.” Maran then signed: “Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld” and affixed his official rabbinic seal: “Rabbi of the Ashkenazi Community in the Holy City of Jerusalem, may it be rebuilt and established.” Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld (1848–1932) was one of the foremost rabbinic leaders of his generation and the undisputed leader of Orthodox Jewry in the Land of Israel. A disciple of the Ketav Sofer and Rabbi Avraham Schag, he served as the first Chief Rabbi of the Eidah HaChareidis of Jerusalem. Renowned for his saintliness, wisdom, and uncompromising devotion to Torah, he earned the celebrated title “Mara D’Ara d’Yisrael” — “Master of the Land of Israel.” [1] Letter sheet, 22.5 × 14.5 cm. Although the Eidah HaChareidis itself represents only a relatively small segment of the Jewish population, its impact on the world of kashrut has far exceeded its size, becoming synonymous with uncompromising halachic standards and meticulous supervision. The roots of that renowned institution can be traced to documents such as the present one. Already in 1923, when Rabbi Sonnenfeld penned this certification, the foundations were being laid for the rigorous tradition of personal rabbinic oversight, careful examination of slaughterers, and unwavering adherence to every detail of the laws of shechitah and kashrut. Before us is therefore not merely a certification for a shochet, but a rare historical document from the formative years of one of the most influential and respected kashrut systems in the Jewish world, a system that continues to uphold the halachic legacy of Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld to this day.
