Letter by Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer – Founder of the Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin. Berlin, 1888 - An official letter written and signed by Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer zt”l on the stationery of the Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin. The letter concerns financial payments and allocations connected with the activities of the Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin and mentions a total sum of 375 Marks. It was written in Berlin on December 3, 1888, and bears Rabbi Hildesheimer’s full autograph signature. Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer (1820–1899) was one of the foremost leaders of German Jewry in the nineteenth century and among the architects of Orthodox Judaism in modern Europe. A disciple of some of the greatest rabbinic authorities of his era, including Rabbi Jacob Ettlinger, author of Aruch LaNer, he served as Rabbi of Eisenstadt and later as Rabbi of the Adass Jisroel community in Berlin. In 1873 he founded the Rabbinical Seminary of Berlin, which became one of the most important centers of Torah scholarship in Europe and trained generations of rabbis and communal leaders. Rabbi Hildesheimer was renowned for his uncompromising defense of traditional Judaism and his determined opposition to the Reform movement in Germany. At the same time, he devoted considerable efforts to the welfare of the Jewish community in the Land of Israel, raising substantial funds and supporting the establishment of educational, charitable, and residential institutions. His scholarly works are regarded as classics of modern rabbinic literature and include Responsa Rabbi Azriel and Chiddushei Rabbi Azriel on the Talmud, among other important publications. Autograph letters by Rabbi Hildesheimer are scarce and highly desirable, particularly those written on the official stationery of the Berlin Rabbinical Seminary and bearing his full signature.
