The Yisa Berachah’s Approbation — From the Final Year of His Life, for the Sefer Mishneh LaMelech HaAcharon - An important and deeply moving approbation penned by the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of the Holy Land, Rabbi Yaakov Shaul Elyashar, author of the responsa Yisa Berachah, for the significant Torah work Mishneh LaMelech HaAcharon. Jerusalem, 1905. This approbation ranks among the last endorsements issued by the venerable Yisa Berachah and was written during the final year of his life. Between its lines one senses the frailty of advanced age, yet equally evident are his unwavering spirit and profound devotion to Torah scholarship and the publication of sacred books. After offering warm praise for both the author and his work, Rabbi Elyashar turns to the Jewish public with an impassioned appeal to support the publication and dissemination of Torah. In his characteristic style, he weaves blessings and encouragement into a rich and elegant tapestry of rabbinic prose: “And every Jew should acquire this book, reach into his pocket, and take a handful of silver and gold according to his means, to strengthen and support its author. May the Almighty in Heaven repay his reward many times over, granting him abundant success, wealth, and honor sevenfold.” This eloquent passage, so characteristic of the literary style of the Yisa Berachah, reflects the personality of one of Jerusalem’s greatest sages, renowned not only for his mastery of halachah and kabbalah but also for his refined language and tireless dedication to supporting Torah scholars and the publication of Torah literature. Rabbi Yaakov Shaul Elyashar, author of Yisa Berachah (1817–1906), was among the foremost sages of Jerusalem and one of the leading figures of the Old Yishuv. A descendant of a distinguished Jerusalem rabbinic family, he was the grandson of Rabbi Eliezer Yerucham Elyashar and a member of a lineage closely associated with the circle of the Chida. Ordained as a rabbinical judge in 1853, he later became Av Beit Din of Jerusalem and, in 1893, was appointed Rishon LeZion and Hakham Bashi of the Land of Israel. For thirteen years he stood at the head of the Jewish community in the Holy Land and was among its foremost leaders, alongside Rabbi Shmuel Salant and Rabbi Eliyahu Mani. The Yisa Berachah left behind a rich corpus of Torah literature, including a celebrated series of works bearing variations of his name: Simchah LeIsh, Ma'aseh Ish, Divrei Ish, She'al HaIsh, Olat Ish, and others. He is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of the Sephardic rabbinate in the Land of Israel during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
