Kovno, 1932. First edition. The first book of the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Hutner, printed when the author was only twenty-six years old. Already in this debut work, one can discern the depth of his thought, his sharp analytical abilities, and his unique approach to clarifying passages in the Talmud and Maimonides—qualities that would later establish him as one of the foremost figures of Torah scholarship and thought in the last generation. The book is adorned with rare and effusive approbations from the leading Torah authorities of the era. Foremost among them is the famous approbation of the gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski, who bestows exceptional praise upon the young author and writes, among other things: “A new vessel filled with old wine… destined for greatness… I rejoiced greatly to see that Israel is not bereft; even in our own days there are young scholars who produce Torah novellae on profound subjects… Happy is the mother who bore him.” Also printed are the approbations of the gaon Rabbi Avraham Dov Ber Kahana Shapiro, Chief Rabbi of Kovno, and of Rabbi Abraham Isaac HaKohen Kook, Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel. These important approbations were omitted from later editions and are therefore found only in the first edition. The gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Hutner (1906–1980), one of the foremost masters of Jewish thought and mussar in the twentieth century, was the distinguished disciple of the famed Alter of Slabodka. In 1925 he immigrated to the Land of Israel as part of the effort to strengthen the newly established Slabodka–Hebron Yeshivah, and later moved to the United States, where in 1939 he was appointed Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshivas Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin. His influence upon the Torah world was immense, particularly through his renowned Pachad Yitzchak series, regarded as one of the high points of Torah thought literature in recent generations. Presented here is the first edition of one of the greatest figures of thought in the last generation—a rare volume that already, at the very beginning of his career, heralds the emergence of a giant of spirit and Torah.
