Letter Concerning a Settlement Between the “Or Torah” Society of Tunisia and Another Organization – Signed by Rabbi Rahamim Hai Hwita HaKohen and Rabbi Shlomo Mazuz - An interesting communal document concerning efforts to reach an amicable settlement and resolve a dispute between the “Or Torah” Society of Tunisia and another organization. Among the signatories is the saintly Rabbi Rahamim Hai Hwita HaKohen zt”l, one of the foremost rabbinic leaders of Djerba and Tunisian Jewry in the twentieth century. Renowned for his extraordinary scholarship, halachic authority, and saintly character, Rabbi Rahamim Hai was revered throughout North Africa. In his later years he immigrated to the Land of Israel and served as Rabbi of Moshav Brachya, where he continued his rabbinic activities until his passing in 1959. Upon his passing, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt”l is reported to have remarked that the Jewish people had lost one of the individuals most worthy of serving as Rishon LeZion, Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel. Rabbi Rahamim Hai was the principal teacher of the saintly Rabbi Matzliach Mazuz zt”l, and many of Tunisia’s leading Torah scholars regarded him as their mentor and spiritual guide. His memory was perpetuated through major Torah institutions named in his honor, including the renowned Kisse Rahamim Yeshivah and Chochmat Rahamim Yeshivah. He authored numerous works in halachah, ethics, and rabbinic thought, many of which remain influential among the descendants of Tunisian Jewry. Also appearing on the document is Rabbi Shlomo Mazuz zt”l, one of the leading rabbis of Djerba and the author of numerous Torah works. Rabbi Shlomo belonged to the distinguished Mazuz family and was the uncle of the prominent rabbinic leaders of the Mazuz dynasty, which produced generations of Torah scholars and communal leaders in Tunisia and later in Israel. This document offers a fascinating glimpse into the role of Tunisia’s rabbinic leadership in public affairs and their ongoing efforts to promote peace, compromise, and communal harmony in accordance with Torah values.
