“May the Fathers and Sons Merit Many Years” – Letter of Blessing by Rabbi Kalfon Moshe HaKohen, Spiritual Leader of Tunisian Jewry, Signed Twice - A warm and affectionate letter of blessing written by Rabbi Kalfon Moshe HaKohen zt”l, the foremost rabbinic authority of Djerba and the spiritual leader of Tunisian Jewry, addressed to Rabbi Yosef Guez, one of the leading rabbis of Tunis. In the letter, Rabbi Kalfon bestows heartfelt blessings upon the recipient and his family, wishing them prosperity, success, and long life. Among his words he writes: “May the fathers and sons merit many years.” The letter bears Rabbi Kalfon’s signature twice, an unusual feature that enhances both the importance and personal character of the document. Rabbi Kalfon Moshe HaKohen (1874–1950) was one of the greatest Torah scholars of North Africa in modern times, serving as Chief Rabbi and Chief Rabbinical Judge of Djerba and as the foremost halachic authority of Tunisian Jewry. His rulings, responsa, and codifications of local custom were accepted throughout Tunisia, and his works became foundational texts for generations of North African Jews. In Arzei HaLevanon he is described as “the greatest rabbi of Djerba in the previous generation, a saintly and pious man.” Among his most important works are the responsa series Shoel VeNishal, the classic study of Tunisian customs Brit Kehunah, Shulchan Aruch Katan, and numerous other books on halachah, ethics, and Jewish thought. The recipient, Rabbi Yosef Guez, was among the leading rabbinic figures of Tunis and one of the principal spiritual leaders of Tunisian Jewry. This letter reflects the deep respect and warm relationship that existed between two of the most influential rabbinic personalities of Tunisia during the first half of the twentieth century.
