Letter Signed by Leading Rabbis of Tunisia – Rabbi Kalfon Moshe HaKohen, Rabbi Mordechai Amies HaKohen, and Rabbi Zion HaKohen - An important rabbinic letter bearing the signatures of three of the foremost Torah authorities of Tunisian Jewry: Rabbi Kalfon Moshe HaKohen, Chief Rabbinical Judge of Djerba; Rabbi Mordechai Amies HaKohen, Chief Rabbinical Judge of Tunis; and Rabbi Zion HaKohen. Foremost among the signatories is Rabbi Kalfon Moshe HaKohen (1874–1950), one of the greatest sages of North African Jewry and the spiritual leader of the Jewish community of Djerba for many decades. Widely regarded as the leading halachic authority of Tunisian Jewry in his generation, his rulings were accepted throughout the region with exceptional reverence. In Arzei HaLevanon he is described as “the greatest rabbi of Djerba in the previous generation, a saintly and pious man.” Rabbi Kalfon served as the principal halachic authority of Djerban Jewry, and the community’s religious life rested heavily upon his rulings and the works he authored. Among his most celebrated books are the responsa series Shoel VeNishal, the foundational work Brit Kehunah on the customs of Tunisian Jewry, Shulchan Aruch Katan, and numerous other works on halachah, custom, ethics, and homiletics. Also signing the letter are Rabbi Mordechai Amies HaKohen, Chief Rabbinical Judge of Tunis and one of the leading rabbinic figures of the city, and Rabbi Zion HaKohen, another prominent member of Tunisia’s rabbinic leadership. This document brings together the signatures of three pillars of Tunisian rabbinic authority and offers a rare glimpse into the rich Torah world and religious leadership of one of the most distinguished Sephardic communities of the modern era.
