Shulchan Aruch HaRav – Munich Edition for the She’erit HaPleita | Published Under the Direction of the Lubavitcher Rebbe with a Facsimile of the Alter Rebbe’s Handwriting - Shulchan Aruch HaRav, Yoreh De’ah and Choshen Mishpat, by Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Chabad and author of the Tanya and Shulchan Aruch HaRav. Kehot Publication Society, Brooklyn [printed in Munich], 1948. An important and historic edition printed in postwar Germany for the surviving Chassidim and Jewish refugees of Europe as part of the spiritual rehabilitation efforts of the She’erit HaPleita. The volume was published under the direction of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, son-in-law of the Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe (the Rayatz) and director of Kehot Publication Society, who would later become the Lubavitcher Rebbe. This edition ranks among the earliest and most significant publications overseen by the Rebbe in the years immediately following the Holocaust, during a period in which he devoted tremendous effort to restoring the foundational texts of Chabad Chassidism to the hands of Holocaust survivors. Printed opposite the title page is the publisher’s introduction, dated 19 Kislev 5708 (1947), describing the preparation and publication of the volume. Of particular importance is the large folded plate included with the book, containing a full facsimile of Responsum No. 14 in the autograph handwriting of the Alter Rebbe, comprising four pages reproduced directly from the original manuscript. This feature makes the edition especially desirable for scholars of Chabad history and collectors of sacred manuscripts. The volume reflects a moving chapter in the history of Chabad after the destruction of European Jewry, when extraordinary efforts were undertaken in the Displaced Persons camps of Germany to revive Torah scholarship and Chassidic life.
