Postcards of this type were distributed during the lifetime of the Chafetz Chaim and were highly sought after by his many students and admirers, who regarded them as treasured mementos of the leading sage of the generation and the spiritual leader of Eastern European Jewry. Maran the Chafetz Chaim (1838–1933), author of the foundational works Chafetz Chaim and Mishnah Berurah, was among the most influential figures in the Torah world of modern times. His name became synonymous with guarding one’s speech, fear of Heaven, and boundless dedication to the dissemination of Torah. His influence extended far beyond the realm of halachah, and he was regarded as the spiritual leader of masses of Jewish people in the generation preceding the Holocaust. Photographs and postcards of the Chafetz Chaim printed during his lifetime have, over the years, become highly sought-after collectors’ items, particularly when they combine his famous portrait with his signature.
