Jerusalem, 11 Av 5692 [1932] An important public letter of considerable historical significance, written as part of an emergency fundraising campaign on behalf of the Etz Chaim institutions of Jerusalem—among the oldest, most influential, and most prominent Torah institutions of the Old Yishuv. The letter was addressed to three of the leading rabbis of Eretz Israel at the time: Rabbi Shlomo Aharonson, Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv; Rishon LeZion Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Hai Uziel; and Rabbi Eliyahu Aharon Milikovsky, Rabbi of Rehovot. The body of the letter was written and signed by Rabbi Yechiel Michel Tukachinsky, one of Jerusalem’s foremost rabbinic figures and a leading administrator of the Etz Chaim institutions. After the letter had been prepared, Maran Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook added several lines in his own handwriting, expressing encouragement and support for the public appeal, and affixed his signature. This personal addition grants the document unique character and exceptional importance, serving as direct testimony to Rabbi Kook’s personal involvement in the efforts to sustain and rescue Jerusalem’s Torah institutions. The letter was written during a period of acute financial hardship. In the early years of the British Mandate, Torah institutions throughout Eretz Israel suffered from severe financial difficulties, which were further intensified by the global economic crisis of the early 1930s. The Etz Chaim institutions, which for decades had borne much of the responsibility for the Torah education of Jerusalem’s Old Yishuv, faced a serious financial crisis. Their leaders therefore turned to the foremost rabbis of the country, seeking their assistance in ensuring the institutions’ continued existence. The document is of particular significance also because of its distinguished recipients. The appeal was directed to three leading rabbinic figures representing different communities and circles, yet all enjoyed broad public influence. This fact reflects the central position occupied by the Etz Chaim institutions within the Torah community of Eretz Israel and the widespread recognition of their importance. Rabbi Yechiel Michel Tukachinsky (1871–1955), author of Luach Eretz Yisrael and the monumental series Gesher HaChaim, was one of the foremost rabbinic leaders of Jerusalem and a principal figure in the administration of the Etz Chaim institutions for many decades. His educational and communal activities left a lasting imprint on Torah life in Eretz Israel. Maran Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook (1865–1935), the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Eretz Israel and founder of the Chief Rabbinate, was among the greatest Torah scholars, Jewish thinkers, and spiritual leaders of modern times. Alongside his vast literary and halachic legacy, he devoted tremendous efforts to strengthening Torah institutions throughout the Land of Israel. Documents such as the present letter provide tangible testimony to his extensive public activity and his enduring concern for the world of Torah.
