Eulogy for the Holy Gaon Rabbi Meir Almash, Father-in-Law of the Menuchat Asher of Csenger – Autograph Manuscript by Rabbi Leib Königsberger, Disciple of the Chatam Sofer – 1842 - A handwritten eulogy in the autograph of the Gaon Rabbi Leib Königsberger, Av Beit Din of Steinamanger, one of the great Torah scholars of Hungary in the mid-19th century. The eulogy was delivered upon the passing of one of the leading rabbis of his generation, Rabbi Meir Almash, Av Beit Din of Bucharest and Mattersdorf, who passed away in Vienna in 1842. The eulogy contains numerous firsthand accounts of Rabbi Meir's life and saintly conduct, the persecutions he endured, and his relocation to Vienna, where he was buried. Rabbi Meir's renowned son-in-law was the holy Gaon Rabbi Asher Anshel Jungreis of Csenger, author of Menuchat Asher. The eulogy also mentions Rabbi Baruch Bendit Goitein, Av Beit Din of Hőgyész, and Rabbi Aharon Hirschman, Av Beit Din of Csáktornya, both of whom passed away around the same period. This eulogy is among the relatively few surviving historical sources documenting the life and character of Rabbi Meir. The present eulogy is mentioned in the Wikipedia entry devoted to Rabbi Meir. It was published in the book Shlomo DeRabbi Meir (New York, 2016), based on the very manuscript offered here. Rabbi Yehuda Leib Königsberger (1791–1861) studied under the Chatam Sofer and Rabbi Shalom Ullmann, Av Beit Din of Lackenbach, father of his friend, the author of Yeriot Shlomo. He received rabbinic ordination from Rabbi Mordechai Banet and the Chatam Sofer. He served as a dayan in Rechnitz, and from 1839 onward as Av Beit Din of the Jewish community of Steinamanger. The eulogy itself extends over [14] pages, preceded by a brief title heading. Autograph manuscript, containing corrections and deletions in the author's own hand. Yiddish words and sentences are occasionally incorporated into the text. Approximately 16 cm. Good condition. Minor wear and typical stains.
