Establishment of Chinuch Atzma'i Letter from the Imrei Chaim of Vizhnitz to the Even HaAzel

"May Hashem find grace in your work. With the blessings of the eternal Torah, Chaim Meir, son of the tzaddik ..."

Historic letter about the establishment of Chinuch Atzma'i, from Rabbi Chaim Meir Hager, author of Imrei Chayim of Vizhnitz - leading Admo"r and navigator of the Chareidi Jewish path, to the gaon Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer, author of Even HaAzel - a prominent rosh yeshivah and chairman of the Council of Torah Sages. Tel Aviv, Adar, 1953.

The letter was written during the period of the establishment of Chinuch HaAtzma'i, which became official about three months later, in Sivan 1953. The letter demonstrates that the author of Even HaAzel offered the Vizhnitzer Rebbe membership in the high committee of Chinuch HaAtzma'i. This is clearly a very honorable position, with influence on the budgets for his institutions. However, the Admo"r responded to Rabbi Isser Zalman, that although it is a tremendous privilege to be a member of the Chinuch Atzma'i's high committee, his health does not permit him to exert himself greatly for this, and it is insufficient to appear only once for a meeting, so he must forgo the appointment ...

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the Admo"r Rabbi Chaim Meir Hager, the "Imrei Chaim" and of the addressee, the gaon Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer, along with a short discussion of Chinuch Atzma'i.
