Historic Proclamation Signed by Gedolei HaDor. Jerusalem, 1981

Original typewritten poster composed and signed by giants of Jerusalem: the ga'ava"d the author of Minchat Yitzchak, the ra'ava"d, Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Freund, and all of the members of the Bada"tz, alongside other gedolei HaDor. Jerusalem, Iyyar, 1981. This is the original proclamation from which the street posters were printed.

Reading the proclamation reveals that the Yishuv in the Land of Israel was trembling greatly from fear of the coming war. The specially-formed committee established many regulations in this proclamation in all aspects of life, between man and his fellow, between man and Hashem - men, women, and children - in order to be saved from the awesome threat. Astonishingly, we do not find in historic literature any specific security-related event during these particular months when this poster was published [except for the bombing of the nuclear reactor in Iraq by Israel about a month after the date of this letter]. It must be that the prayers were indeed accepted and the danger passed with Heavenly mercy, without leaving any mark on the pages of history.

Signatories on the letter - gedolei hador, members of the Bada"tz, the geonim:

  • The gaon Rabbi Ya'akov Yitzchak Weiss, ga'ava"d of the Edah HaChareidit, author of Shu"t Minchat Yitzchak
  • The gaon Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Freund, ra'ava"d and later ga'ava"d of the Edah
  • The gaon Rabbi Yisrael Moshe Dushinsky, later ga'ava"d of the Edah
  • The gaon Rabbi Yisrael Ya'akov Fisher, later ra'ava"d of the Edah
  • The gaon Rabbi Avraham David Horowitz, the "Strausberger Rav"
  • The gaon Rabbi Binyamin Rabinowitz, the Admo"r of Mishkenot HaRo'im

In the margins at the top are signatures of additional rabbis, the geonim:

  • The gaon Rabbi Elya' Shachna Zohn, a disciple of the Chafetz Chaim
  • The gaon Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg, rosh yeshivah of Torah Ore
  • The gaon Rabbi Yehudah Tzadkah, rosh yeshivah of Porat Yosef
