HAMBURG-SÜD-AMERIKANISCHE DAMPF-SCHIFFFAHRTS-GESELLSCHAFT - Condition (2) | Enamel sign / Porcelain sign, convex, thickly stenciled, GER around 1922, 50 x 75 cm, Torpedo Email - Frankfurter Emaillirwerke, Neu-Isenburg, showing the Cap Polonio at full speed. At the time, the fast steamer was considered the largest ship in the German merchant fleet. After launching in 1914, it was temporarily registered under a British flag until the Hamburg-Süd shipping company bought it back in 1921 for $150,000 and used it for its South America service from then on. Signs like this one were used to advertise the corresponding voyages. In addition to this green-based, German-language version, there are also versions with the same ship illustrated on a yellow or gray background, some of which are in Spanish. All of these pieces are incredibly rare – we are all the more pleased to be able to offer an unrestored original. The surface is in mint condition – all elements of the red and gray enamel have been thickly filled in, making the ship's superstructure, porthole and flag appear almost tangible – a real eye-catcher! | We do only sell old original pieces - no reproductions or fakes.
