KURTISANE TAKAO - MIYAGAWA CHŌSHUN | EMAILSCHILD | ZUSTAND (1) - Condition (1) | Enamel sign, thickly filled in colors, colored by hand, JPN around 1920, 70 x 100 cm, a masterpiece of traditional enamel art. Miyagawa Chōshun’s portrait of the courtesan Takao II has been meticulously rendered in enamel by hand, with all elements of the motif filled in with thick, icing-like enamel and partially hand-colored. Chōshun (1683–1753) was a prominent painter of the Edo period and founder of the Miyagawa school. Unlike many other ukiyo-e artists, he did not create woodblock prints but focused on painting directly with a brush. The depiction shows the courtesan wearing a magnificent, intricately layered kimono adorned with autumnal motifs such as chrysanthemums and bamboo. The enamel work on this kimono, in particular, is absolutely stunning.
