HOCH ALT HEIDELBERG | EMAILSCHILD | ZUSTAND (1-2) - Condition (1-2) | Enamel sign, stenciled and colored by hand, GER around 1900, 28 x 23 cm, one of the items in the auction that particularly captivated us with its storied past. The enamel sign depicts members of the Heidelberg fraternity “Vineta” raising a toast to “Hoch Alt Heidelberg,” as evidenced by their clothing and, in particular, the color of their caps. The student fraternity originally formed from a group of rowers who practiced the sport on the Neckar River in a four-man boat, the Vineta. The group’s regular haunt was the Heidelberg tavern “Zum Perko,” later renamed “Löwenbraukeller” due to the beer served there. As documented by an old commemorative postcard, the student fraternity is pictured in front of that very pub. The hidden symbolism in the sign has a mysterious quality that only becomes apparent at second glance.
