Sefer Mor u'Ketziah, by the Ya'avetz, Altona, 1761-1768. First Edition. With the annotations of the Gaon Rabbi Gedaliah Lipschutz. - Sefer Mor u'Ketziah, annotations, explanations, and novellae on the words of the Tur, Beit Yosef, Shulchan Aruch, and Magen Avraham, parts 1-2, by the Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Emden - the Ya'avetz. Altona, [1761-1768]. First edition. The author's printing press. Two parts in two volumes. The books were printed in the author's private printing house. On the margin of the title page it is written: ”Printed in Altona - in the author's house.” On the last leaf is a map of the borders of the Land of Israel as sketched by the Ya'avetz. The Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Emden – the Ya'avetz (1698-1776), son of the Gaon, the author of Hakham Tzvi, one of the great later authors. His large and well-known book Mor u'Ketziah was accepted as a foundational book in the laws of Orach Chaim, and his words were brought as halakha by all the great later authorities, up to the book Mishnah Berurah by our Rabbi the Chafetz Chaim. In the omissions at the end of Part 1, the Ya'avetz relates several miracles that occurred to him, and as a result, he accepted these days as a holiday for himself. Among them, he recounts that while studying Tur Orach Chaim, which this book deals with, during the night, he fell asleep at his table and was almost burned by the candle that was lit on the table. The great Gaon Rabbi Gedaliah Lipschutz (1746-1826), Av Beit Din of Cleves and Chadeish, author of Regel Yeshara and other compositions, was born in Deutz in the year 1746 to his father the Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Lipschutz, Av Beit Din of Cleves. He served as Av Beit Din of Emden, and from the year 1784 as Av Beit Din of Oberzitzk, and thereafter until his passing as Av Beit Din of Chadeish. Rabbi Gedaliah was an exceptional Gaon, and already at the age of twenty-four he was ordained by the Gaon Rabbi Aryeh Leib Ginzburg of Metz, the author of Shaagat Aryeh. Rabbi Gedaliah's son is the Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Lipschutz, known for his work Tiferet Yisrael on the Mishnah. This work was accepted throughout Israel and has been printed in numerous editions. Rabbi Gedaliah was his primary teacher, greatly influencing his unique study method. His father also influenced his extensive engagement with the commentary on the Mishnah, as he testifies and mentions him with honor in the introduction to Seder Nashim.
