Letter from Rabbi Mordechai Amram Hirsch, Av Beit Din of Hamburg, to the Chassid, Rabbi Yissachar Berish Orenstein, the son of the Divrei Avraham, 1878 A letter of Torah thoughts and more, from the rabbi of Hamburg and Prague, Rabbi Mordechai Amram Hirsch, to Rabbi Yissachar Barish Orenstein – the stepson of the Mahara”m Schick. 1878. The letter was written in the city of his first rabbinical post – and was in response to a letter from Rabbi Orenstein. The Gaon Rabbi Mordechai Amram Hirsch (1833-1909) was an Av Beit Din in Alt-Ofen, Prague and Hamburg. He was a student of the Ktav Sofer and of Rabbi Moshe Ephraim Broin of Csaba. While Rabbi Hirsch was the rabbi of Hamburg, he wrote a strongly worded responsum against the introduction of the organ into the synagogue. He wrote Divrei Shalom v’Emet. His descendents include rabbis in the repected Erentrau family. Rabbi Yissachar Barish Orenstein (d. 1934) was the son of Rabbi Avraham Chaim, the Av Beit Din of Bartfeld and a student of the Chatam Sofer. Following Rabbi Avraham Chaim’s death, Rabbi Chaim of Sanz suggested that Rabbi Avraham Chaim’s widow marry the Mahara”m Schick, and Rabbi Yissachar was raised by his stepfather for eight years. Rabbi Yissachar copied and arranged some of his stepfather’s letters and was among the greatest of the disciples of the Vizhnitzer Rebbe, the Ahavat Yisrael. This signed letter is completely in his handwriting. 1878, 34x21 cm.
