Sefer Leshon Limudim with Shekel Hakodesh
Kushta, 1542
Rare Remnant of Spanish Poetry from Time of Expulsion
*

‘Leshon Limudim’ deals with Hebrew grammar, by Rabbi David Ibn Yachya, who was exiled from Portugal during the expulsion.

Printed at the end of the sefer is: 'Shekel Hakodesh - A Short Treatise on the Craft of Poetry', containing the accepted principles of poetry practiced in Spain and Portugal, with examples from poems by Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra and Rabbi Shlomo Ibn Gabirol.

‘Shekel Hakodesh’ was printed without its author's name but today it is accepted that its author is Rabbi Shlomo Almoli, author of ‘Pitron Chalomos’, who edited the sefer and composed a poem in its honor, printed at the beginning of the sefer.

The author of ‘Leshon Limudim’, Rabbi David Ibn Yachya, is the grandfather of Rabbi Gedaliah Ibn Yachya, author of ‘Shalshelet HaKabbalah’.

Rare sefer.

Kushta, 1542. Printed by Eliezer ben Gershom Soncino.

Page Count: [45] leaves. Size: 19 cm. Condition: Good. Minor stains. Interesting signature and stamps on title page.
