Signature of Rabbi Shimon Sidan, Disciple of Chasam Sofer, on an Impressive Communal Document from Tirnau 1862 * A large and attractive handwritten document ”LeZichron Olamim” issued by the Chevra Kadisha of the holy community of Tirnau, recording their commitment to recite Kaddish and study Mishnayos on the yahrtzeit of a community member, Rabbi Shmuel Segal Hertzfeld. The document bears the signature of Rabbi Shimon Sidan, Av Beis Din of Tirnau, one of the distinguished disciples of the Chasam Sofer and among the foremost Rabbanim of Hungary for decades. Rabbi Shimon Sidan of Nadas, author of Shevet Shimon (d. 1892), studied under the Chasam Sofer for nine years and was so beloved by his revered Rebbi that he was among those privileged to regularly eat at his table. He also studied Torah from Rabbi Shmuel Nadas Sonnenfeld, Av Beis Din of Yergen, grandfather of Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. Rabbi Shimon served as Av Beis Din of Tziper from 1845-1856 and later assumed the position of Av Beis Din of Tirnau. Following Rabbi Shimon’s signature, the document is signed by three gabbaim of the Chevra Kadisha. Tirnau, 1862. Large document: 22×37 cm.
