Letter of Recommendation and Blessings From Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld Regarding the Yerushalmi Tzaddik Rabbi Notta Weiss * Four lines, written and signed by Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, Rav of Yerushalayim, requesting that people donate and assist towards the marriages of the orphans of the renowned maggid, Rabbi Nota Tzvi Weiss. The Rav writes: “His merit is worthy of protecting anyone who benefits him, to protect in this world and the next world.” At the top of the page is a message in Yiddish from Rabbi Notta Tzvi's widow, Chana Ita Weiss. Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld (1849-1932) was the leader of the chareidi Jewish community in Eretz Yisrael. He immigrated from Hungary to Eretz Yisrael in his youth, with his teacher, Rabbi Abraham Shag. In Jerusalem, he became close to Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin and received Torah and guidance from him. In addition to his greatness in Torah, he served for decades as the administrator of Kollel Ungarin. From 1920, he served as the first Av Beis Din of the Eidah HaChareidis. Rabbi Notta Tzvi Weiss, known as ”Rebbi Notta the Maggid” (1873-1918), was one of the revered figures of the Old Yishuv in Jerusalem, renowned for his holiness from when he was a young child. For seven years, he studied Torah under the tutelage of Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin, and even eulogized him at the young age of twenty-five. A gifted darshan, he delivered talks and eulogies in various shuls solely for the sake of Heaven, without seeking any compensation. Among those who eulogized him at his funeral was Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, who had known him from his youth and deeply respected him, as can be inferred from the present letter.
