Important and Sharply Worded Letter from Rabbi Chaim Naeh Regarding Measurement Controversy * A remarkable handwritten and autographed letter by the renowned Gaon Rabbi Avraham Chaim Naeh. In the letter, the author addresses his dispute with the Steipler surrounding what constitutes proper halachic shiurim (measurements), and in his pursuit of truth writes: “And I must point out that regarding the measure of a kezayis and a kebeitza of bread, I did not rely on my own measurement, but merely cited from the words of the Sephardic Geonim, ” and he lists their names. He continues, writing sharply: “Consequently, you need not be concerned about any pitfall, Heaven forbid… for in my opinion, his strength is not so great as to contend with dozens of Geonim - even if they are Sephardic - and with a custom that has become widespread.” After his signature, he expands further in halachic discussion on the matter of measurements, offering a new proof to his position, which he published in his sefer Shiurei Tziyon, printed that same year. Rabbi Chaim Naeh (1890–1954) was a prominent Torah figure in Eretz Yisrael, and a distinguished Chabad Chassid. After he publicized his view on halachic measurements, the Chazon Ish addressed the matter in his Kuntres Hashiurim, and the Steipler came out against Rabbi Chaim Naeh in his sefer Eifat Tzedek, sparking a major halachic debate between them. Although the Chazon Ish is known to have opposed Rabbi Naeh’s measurements, he nonetheless respected and admired him, stating: “I never had an opponent in halachah other than Rabbi Chaim Naeh, who is my halachic opponent.” Petach Tikvah, 1949.
