Nachalas Shimon by Disciple of the Noam Elimelech of Lizhensk First Edition. Lashtzov, 1815 * Chiddushim on several parshiyos from the Torah by Rabbi Shimon Ashkenazi, Av Beis Din of Dobromil. The author was among the primary disciples of Rebbe Elimelech of Lizhensk, whom he explicitly cites in this sefer: “So too is it in the sefer of my teacher, the holy Rabbi Elimelech, of blessed memory” (Parshas Va’eira, leaf 13a). His approbation appears alongside that of the Maggid of Kozhnitz in Midrash Shocher Tov (Zolkiew, 1800) and is also mentioned by the holy Rabbi Alexander of Komarno (father of the Heichal HaBerachah and brother of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch of Ziditshov), who writes at the beginning of his sefer Zichron Devarim: “…as I heard a holy man speak – the great Rabbi, our teacher Rabbi Shimon Ashkenazi of Dobromil…” All of Rabbi Shimon Ashkenazy's writings were destroyed in a fire, and he himself passed away without offspring. His spiritual legacy lives on through this single surviving work, Nachalas Shimon. A rare sefer. Lashtzov, 1815. First Edition. Page Count: [4], 20; 38 leaves. Size: 18 cm. This copy is the one photographed in the Stefansky catalog, p. 55. The rare printing location, Lashtzov, is confirmed by the testimony of the city’s Av Beis Din, Rabbi Mordechai Ziskind, who writes in his approbation printed at the beginning of the sefer that the publisher intends to print the sefer “here in my congregation upon the altar of the press.” Only about twenty Hebrew sefarim were printed in Lashtzov, among them foundational works in Chassidus. That same year saw the first printing of Ohr HaChochmah by the Rebbe of Krisnopli, as well as Shivchei HaBesht.
