Be’er Mayim Chaim by Rabbi Chaim of Czernowitz Shapira Press. Zhitomir 1860 * The commentary ‘Be'er Mayim Chaim’ on the Torah was written by Rabbi Chaim of Czernowitz. Rabbi Czernowitz served as the Av Beis Din in several holy communities and, in his final years, established his residence in the holy city of Tzfas. The sefer is replete and overflowing with the fundamental principles of Chassidic thought, and quickly earned its place as one of the classic works of Chassidus, “for all his words are sweeter than honey and the finest nectar, ” (in the words of the holy Apter Rav.) The sefer was printed in holiness by Rabbi Chanina Lipa and Rabbi Yehoshua Heshel Shapira - grandsons of Rabbi Moshe Shapira of Slavita. Rabbi Chaim of Czernowitz (1760-1818) , was the author of Be’er Mayim Chaim and Sidduro shel Shabbos. He was also among the progenitors of Chassidus and a genius in both the Revealed and Hidden Torah. Rabbi Chaim acquired Torah and wisdom from the holy Admor Rabbi Yechiel Michel of Zlotchov who was his primary teacher. He served as Rav in the communities of Czernowitz, Botoshan, Mohyliv, and Kishinev in Romania, and was one of the preeminent disseminators of Chassidus in Romania and Bukovina. In 1813, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of traveling to Eretz Yisrael where he settled in Tzfas and lived there until his passing. He is renowned in the world of Chassidus mainly due to his sefer Be'er Mayim Chaim, which are “flames of a holy fire” that guide a Jew in Avodas Hashem, through the path of Torah and Chassidus.
