Remarkable letter from the Lubavitcher Rebbe - written immediately after Tisha B’Av ”May it soon be transformed…. into joy and gladness and festive occasions.” Brooklyn, Motzaei Tisha B’Av 1984 * This lengthy letter includes two leaves and was written by the Admor Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson - the seventh Rebbe in the Lubavitch dynasty, whose influence extended to the entire world. The letter was sent immediately after Tisha B’Av, and the Rebbe began his letter with a blessing “that the fast should soon be transformed (as well as all the fasts, ) into joy, gladness and festive occasions.” In most of the letter, the Rebbe discusses matters relating to Moshiach, his birth (”on the afternoon of Tisha B’Av, the Mashiach is born, ”) and the removal of the cause of galus [exile] — particularly through joyous farbrengens [gatherings] that ”break through boundaries and limitations.” The Rebbe then instructs his followers to hold farbrengens on these days - the fifteenth of Av, the Shabbos that follows, and the Shabbos after the Shabbos Mevarchim for Elul. Regarding this, he writes: “And with three times, it becomes a chazakah [established] – a commitment regarding Torah and its mitzvos, carried out with joy and gladness of heart, at all times.” The Rebbe concludes his letter with a heartfelt blessing for the end of galus and the speedy arrival of Moshiach: “And may all this also hasten and accelerate the fulfillment, very soon, of the promises and assurances that these days we are departing from will be transformed into joy, gladness and festive occasions; that truth and peace will reign (through Ahavas Yisrael); and that all will recognize that You, Hashem alone, reign supreme over the entire world, with the true and complete redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu.” The Rebbe then signed his name in his own handwriting: “M. Schneerson.” Following this, the Rebbe writes with deep feeling about the 20th of Av, the yahrtzeit of his righteous father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak ben Rabbi Schneur Ber Schneerson, “who risked his life to spread Judaism among the Jewish People behind the Iron Curtain, and because of this was imprisoned, sentenced to exile, and died in exile, ” and he encourages his followers to hold farbrengens on the day of the yahrzeit. He concludes: “May his merit protect us and all of Yisrael, may they live and be well.” Thereafter, on the second page, he presents over 36 wide lines, citing sources that expand upon his words from all areas of Torah, with exceptional brilliance. Among others, he references the sefarim Likutei Levi Yitzchak and Toras Levi Yitzchak. This is an exceptional letter - overflowing with unique content. It is filled with the Rebbe’s longing and yearning for the coming of Moshiach, the importance of conducting joyous farbrengens, profound Ahavas Yisrael, and words of reverence for his holy father.
