Ohr HaNe'arev by Ab”d of Berditchev with Approbations from Chassidic Leaders First Edition. Ostroh, 1824 * This sefer contains chiddushim on many masechtos of Shas. It was authored by one of the tzaddikim of the famous kloiz (shul/beis medrash) in Brod - the gaon Rabbi Avraham Aryeh Leib Kahana. Rabbi Kahana later went on to become the Av Beis Din and Moreh Tzedek in Berditchev and Polonne. This sefer includes a series of chiddushim titled ‘Divrei Shlomo.’ These chidushim were published by the gaon Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Kahana, only son of Rabbi Avraham Aryeh Leib Kahana. At the beginning of the sefer we find many unique and important approbations from the geonim and tzaddikim of the generation, including: · Reb Meir of Brod (”I recall from my childhood that his name became renowned as one of the outstanding geonim.”) · Reb Ephraim Zalman Margaliot (”Holy soul from birth… the living lion, the author z”l.”) · The Bas Ayin, Reb Avraham Dov of Avritch (”As strong as a lion, someone who spread Torah in the holy community of Brod, and from there was brought and raised up to become Av Beis Din in the holy community of Berditchev.”) · Reb Betzalel Margaliot, son of the Meir Nesivim · Reb Yitzchok of Radvil (son of the Maggid of Zlotchov) At the end of the Book are tables of contents with a special title page. Printed on the title page are two additional brief approbations from the Rabbanim of Brod, as well as lines by the Ohev Yisrael of Apta in which he joins the advance subscribers of the sefer, wanting to receive it upon its printing. The author, Rabbi Avraham Kahana (d. 1788) , was one of the heads of the famous kloiz (shul/beis medrash) of kabbalists in Brod, in the same era when Rabbi Chaim Sanz, the Noda B’Yehuda, Rabbi Gershon of Kitov - brother-in-law of the Baal Shem Tov, and many other tzaddikim learned there. Later, he served as Rav of Berditchev (before the Kedushas Levi arrived there in 1785), and later moved to Polonne, where he passed away. He left behind chiddushim renowned for their brilliance. Unfortunately only the sefer Ohr HaNe'arev was printed and the rest of his writings were lost. His son, Reb Shlomo (d. 1852) , likely born in Berditchev, resided in Ostroh, where he learned and taught, in great depth, and at great personal difficulty.
