Pri Chadash with Handwritten Glosses and Chiddushim of Rabbi Avraham Shag of Kobersdorf, Leading Disciple of the Chasam Sofer Furth, 1769 * The sefer Pri Chadash on Yoreh Deah - one of the foundational works in the halachos of issur v'heter, was authored by the renowned gaon Rabbi Chizkiyah di Silva, one of the leading poskim. The title page of the sefer features the handwritten signature of the illustrious gaon Rabbi Avrohom Shag-Zwebner, Av Beis Din of Kobersdorf, one of the leading disciples of the Chasam Sofer and one of the important Rabbanim of Hungary. Throughout the sefer are several glosses in his handwriting, one of which is signed: ”Avraham Shag” At the end of the sefer is a complete leaf in his handwriting, containing chiddushim and comments on the sefer. These glosses were not included in the aforementioned collection and it is possible they have never been published. Rabbi Avrohom Shag-Zwebner (Freistadt 1801–Yerushalayim 1876) was an extraordinary gaon and tzaddik and very sharp. In his youth he began studying by the Chasam Sofer, and was most beloved to him. The Chasam Sofer would often speak at length of his student’s greatness and sharpness. He even remarked in the presence of many in the Beis Medrash: ”It is rare to find a Talmid Chacham as great as the Rav of Schattlsdorf.' Likewise, Rabbi Zalman Spitzer, the Chasam Sofer’s son-in-law, wrote in his eulogy: ”It is well known that he was one of the outstanding students of the Chasam Sofer, received semicha from him fifty years ago, and was exceedingly treasured and loved by him.” Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld was among his closest talmidim. He remained attached to his rebbi all his life; and when Rabbi Avraham immigrated to Yerushalayim in 1873, his loyal student, Rabbi Sonnenfeld, joined him. Likewise, Rabbi Meshulam Feish, Av Beis Din of Tosh, was among his students. There are more than 15 glosses, some brief and some difficult to decipher or slightly incomplete. Size: 32.5 cm. Condition: Fair–good, paper somewhat worn, typical of Furth printings. Fine new binding. On the title page and throughout the sefer are several signatures of Rabbi David Pick of Breslau, possibly from the family of Rabbi Yeshaya Pick, who was Av Beis Din of Breslau.
