Autographed and Handwritten Glosses of Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik Weiss, Av Beis Din of Svaliava, on Sefer Issur V’Heter Prague, 1784 * The sefer yesod Issur V'Heter - a fundamental halacha sefer by one of the Rishonim of Ashkenaz, with glosses in the handwriting of the holy gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik Weiss, author of Beis Yitzchak. The title page features his holy signature and personal seal, along with dozens of handwritten glosses. The signature of the Papa Rebbe, author of Vayechi Yosef, also appears on the title page. The majority of these glosses are transcriptions of the Rema’s glosses on Issur V'Heter, as printed in the sefer Yad Rema (Lemberg 1866), which the Beis Yitzchak copied into his personal copy of the sefer. The rest of the glosses are references to where the Rema cites these rulings in his glosses on the Shulchan Aruch and in Darkei Moshe from the words of the sefer Issur V'Heter. Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik Weiss, Av Beis Din of Svaliava (1824–1894), was one of the great kabbalists and tzaddikim of Hungary, a master of both Revealed and Hidden Torah, deeply connected to his rebbes and editor of their works in Kabbalah. Born in Munkacs in 1824, from a young age he dedicated himself to Avodas Hashem in sanctity and purity. He studied Chassidus and Kabbalah under the Bnei Yissachar, Rabbi Yehuda Tzvi of Rozdal, the Sar Shalom of Belz and Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik of Ziditchov. A renowned Kabbalist, he is referred to by the author of Bnei Shilaishim as “the awe-inspiring Kabbalist.” He edited the sefer Amud HaTorah of his rebbi Rabbi Yehuda Tzvi of Rozdal. Likewise, his nephew and disciple, the holy Imrei Yosef of Spinka, testifies in the introduction to Likutei Torah that Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik Weiss arranged and edited the writings of his rebbi Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik of Ziditchov and in accordance with the will of Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik of Ziditchov, the Imrei Yosef was entrusted with those manuscripts. Rabbi Shimon Greenfeld writes in his Shu”t Maharshag (Vol. III, Siman 30): “Such was the practice of the gaon and Kabbalist Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik Weiss zt”l, author of Beis Yitzchak on Megillah, and I knew that he was almost the only Kabbalist with this wisdom in his region.” Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik served as Av Beis Din of Svaliava for twenty years and as Raavad of Munkacs for some fifteen years, until his passing on the 22nd of Adar 1894, at the age of seventy to the day. At his funeral, he was eulogized by the gaon, author of Darkei Teshuvah, who had relied on his vast knowledge during the compilation of his sefer. Among his works are the renowned Beis Yitzchak on Maseches Megillah, Toldos Yitzchak, and Divrei Yitzchak. His son-in-law was the Admor Rabbi Elimelech son of Rabbi Meshulam Feish of Tosh. The Admor Rabbi Yosef Greenwald of Papa, author of Vayechi Yosef (1903-1984), was the son of Rabbi Yaakov Yechezkiya Greenwald, and grandson of the Arugas HaBosem. He was a disciple of both his father and his great-uncle, the author of Keren LeDavid. After the Holocaust, he immigrated to the United States and reestablished the illustrious Pupa institutions. Rabbi Aharon of Belz testified regarding him that he had never tasted the taste of sin.
