Letter from Rabbi Itzik Aharon Landsberg, Av Beis Din of Grosswardein, Disciple of the Chasam Sofer and Friend of the Ksav Sofer * A lengthy handwritten and autographed letter by Rabbi Yisrael Itzik Aharon Landsberg, Av Beis Din of Grosswardein. It was sent to his friend Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ullman, Av Beis Din of Makova, author of Yerios Shlomo. The letter contains greetings and chiddushei Torah. Rabbi Itzik Landsberg, Av Beis Din of Grosswardein (1804–1879) , was a close and beloved disciple of the Chasam Sofer. For nine years, he studied in his yeshiva and did not leave his side, and he ate at his table every Shabbos. He served in the rabbinate in Yamring, Grosswardein, and other places. The recipient of the letter, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ullman (1792-1863) , author of Yerios Shlomo, was one of the great rabbanim in Hungary and his talmidim became the rabbanim and poskim of the next generation. Rabbi Shlomo Zalman was born in Ansbach to Rabbi Shalom Charif, author of Divrei Rash, and married the daughter of Rabbi Simcha Bunim Eiger, Av Beis Din of Mattersdorf and brother of Rabbi Akiva Eiger. In 1826, he was appointed Av Beis Din of Makova where he served as rav for close to forty years. His works include Sifrei Yerios Shlomo on Yoreh Deah, responsa, sugyos and drashos. Mahari Assad described him as “the light and sanctity of Klal Yisrael” and “the glory of the generation, wondrous among the Sanhedrin” and the Divrei Chaim of Sanz wrote about his sefer that “since the day the Noda BiYehuda wrote his sefer, there has not been a work like this.” Grosswardein, 11 Tishrei 1859.
