Handwritten Letter from Rabbi Shmuel Rosenberg of Unsdorf Unsdorf, 1914 * Handwritten and autographed letter by Rabbi Shmuel Rosenberg, one of the great Rabbanim of Hungary, sent to Rabbi Mordechai Friedman, Av Beis Din of Berettyóújfalu. In the letter, Rabbi Shmuel apologizes that he is unable to assist with a certain matter, in part because it runs contrary to the opinion of the rabbanim heading the “Kanzlei, ” the council of rabbanim of the region, and he expresses himself thus: “If the rabbanim of the Kanzlei have already dealt with it, my words neither add nor detract, for they are the ones appointed to oversee the affairs of the state, and not I…” He concludes with words of prayer: “And from Heaven may they find mercy. So are the words of your friend, who seeks your welfare, the humble Shmuel Rosenberg.” Rabbi Shmuel Rosenberg of Unsdorf (1842 - 1919) , author of Be'er Shmuel, was one of the greatest disseminators of Torah in Hungary. For thirty-five years he served as the rav of Mattersdorf, and thousands of students emerged from his yeshiva as community rabbis, roshei yeshiva, and halachic authorities throughout Hungary. He was renowned as a miracle worker and many flocked to his door seeking blessings and salvation. His numerous disciples recounted wondrous stories of his ruach hakodesh (see Sefer Toldos Shmuel, essay on ruach hakodesh). Unsdorf, 1914. Entirely in Rabbi Shmuel’s handwriting.
