One of the Foremost Sifrei Mussar: Sefer HaYashar Printed by a Grandson of the Rav of Slavita Zhitomir, 1859 * Sefer HaYashar, attributed to Rabbeinu Tam of the Ba’alei Tosfos, is a fundamental mussar sefer on moral discussions, ethical topics, and matters of repentance. Sefer HaYashar gained much popularity among Jews everywhere and was printed in numerous editions. Already during the time of the Rishonim, Rabbeinu Yehuda son of the Rosh wrote: ”Accustom yourselves to study the sefer Chovos HaLevavos and Sefer HaYashar” (last will and testament of Rabbi Yehuda ben HaRosh, Pressburg 1885, p. 11). Printed by Rabbi Aryeh Leib Shapira, grandson of the Rav of Slavita, Rabbi Moshe Shapira, son of the holy Rabbi Pinchas of Koritz. Zhitomir, 1859. Page Count: 38 leaves. Condition: Good. New binding. *** The sefer was mistakenly attributed to Rabbeinu Tam, the Ba’al HaTosfos, because of his halachic sefer by the same name: Sefer HaYashar. Already Rabbi Avraham Saba in his sefer Tzror HaMor, Parshas Nitzavim, writes: ”They say Rabbeinu Tam composed it.” Rabbi Menachem di Lonzano writes that its author was Rabbi Zerachiah the Greek, and the Chida tended to accept his view (see Shem HaGedolim, entry Rabbi Zerachiah the Greek).
