“עשר בשביל שתתעשר” Lengthy Teshuva by Rabbi Yosef Leib Sofer, Av Beis Din of Paks, on Ma'aser Kesafim Paks, 1902 * A lengthy three-page handwritten and autographed letter by Rabbi Yosef Leib Sofer, Av Beis Din of Paks, author of Yalkut Sofer. The teshuva discusses the obligation of Ma'aser Kesafim (tithing of money) and its requirement in present times. In practice, Rabbi Yosef Leib rules that “the Sages did not obligate Ma'aser Kesafim, but only to give it as tzedakah — so it seems to me.” To the best of Zaidy's knowledge, this letter has never been printed. Rabbi Yosef Leib Sofer, Av Beis Din of Derecske and Paks (1861–1918), was the son of Rabbi Eliezer Zusman Sofer, Av Beis Din of Paks, author of Yalkut Eliezer and Sefer HaMikneh. He was a disciple of his father, of the Shevet Sofer, and of Rabbi Moshe HaLevi Pollak, Av Beis Din of Bonyhád. From 1885 he served as Av Beis Din of Derecske, and from 1903 succeeded his father in Paks. He became renowned for his works Likutei Sofer on the mitzvos, in two parts, and Yalkut Sofer on the Torah, in five parts (mentioned at the end of the present letter). Paks, 1902 .
