Sha'agas Aryeh Shapira Press Slavita, 1832 * A masterful work of sharp analytical reasoning on 108 sections in Hilchos Orach Chaim, structured as questions and answers with exceptional clarity and precise logical order. Authored by the brilliant gaon Rabbi Aryeh Leib of Metz, a paragon of brilliance and unmatched breadth of Torah knowledge. The Vilna Gaon testified that he could “arrange a summary of the entire Shas in his mind in one hour” (Aliyos Eliyahu, note 16). This sefer is regarded as the sefer yesod of analytical Talmudic learning. Endless commentaries and chaburos have been written on his words! It was printed in holiness and with utmost meticulousness by Rabbi Shmuel Avraham Shapira, son of Rabbi Moshe Shapira Av Beis Din of Slavita, and grandson of Rabbi Pinchas of Koritz. It has approbations from the sages of Lithuania and Poland. In the approbation of Rabbi Chaim HaKohen Rappaport of Ostroh, the printer is referenced as “the famed chassid, scion of holy ancestors, Av Beis Din of the holy community of Slavita, may he be blessed with life.” In this edition, the Kuntres Acharon of twenty-one pages appears for the first time, containing notes, by the proofreader Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Leib of Vilna, with references to the teachings of the Hafla'ah, Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin (a disciple of the Sha'agas Aryeh), and other gedolei hador. Provenance: Tzfunot Auction — — — — — — — — — — — — — The author, Rabbi Aryeh Leib of Metz, author of Sha'agas Aryeh (1695–1785) , is one of the most famous geonim of recent generations. He headed the yeshiva of Minsk, later moved to Volozhin, and ultimately settled in Metz, where he served as rav until his passing at an advanced age. His published sefarim include Sha'agas Aryeh, Turei Even (on Rosh Hashanah, Chagigah, and Megillah), and Gevuras Ari (on Ta'anis, Yoma, and Makkos). The Chofetz Chaim, in his introduction to Gevuras Ari, refers to him as: “Our great master, the prince of Torah, the Gaon of geonim, the lion among the mighty, the light of Yisrael, author of Sha'agas Aryeh.” So great were his brilliance and intellectual integrity that it was said of him that if Torah were ever to be forgotten, Rabbi Aryeh Leib could restore it through the sheer power of his pilpul!
